About Le Sueur

Le Sueur Wines is the realisation of a long-held dream by winemaker Louis Le Sueur van der Riet. The vision was born in 2006 during his very first harvest and came to fruition with the release of the maiden vintage of Le Sueur Wines in 2014.

Nestled in the Klein Karoo, Le Sueur Wines celebrates the region’s unique terroir by crafting wines that are expressive, balanced, and unmistakably South African. From hand-harvested reds to elegant whites, every bottle reflects Louis’s passion for precision, creativity, and the art of winemaking. Over the years, the winery has gained recognition for producing the Klein Karoo’s first Platter 5-star red and the highest-rated Klein Karoo white wine by international critic Tim Atkin.

About the Winemaker

Louis Le Sueur van der Riet grew up in Kimberley with a love for the ocean, which initially drew him towards marine biology. However, a stint at an abalone farm soon revealed that a life among shells was far less exciting than imagined. In 2006, Louis’s curiosity turned to wine when he joined his first harvest at a cooperative cellar near Worcester. That experience ignited a lifelong passion for winemaking.

Later that year, he interned at Silver Oak Cellars in Napa Valley, USA, before returning to study viticulture and oenology at Elsenburg, Stellenbosch, graduating in 2009. Louis quickly made his mark in the industry, serving as Assistant Winemaker at Allesverloren Estate and later as Head Winemaker at De Krans in Calitzdorp, where he earned multiple awards including the SA Young Wine Show trophy for best Cape Port and numerous Platter 5-star wines.

Louis has also received international acclaim, with double gold medals at Veritas, top honours from the Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show, and multiple awards from the Terroir Wine Awards. His meticulous approach combines traditional techniques with innovative methods, producing wines that are elegant, expressive, and uniquely reflective of the Klein Karoo.

The Paradox

The concept behind Le Sueur Paradoks is as intriguing as the wine itself. A 50:50 blend of Cinsaut and Pinot Noir, Paradoks explores the paradox of creating a union from two distinct grape varieties—the very parent grapes of South Africa’s iconic Pinotage.

Every step of its production is crafted with precision: grapes are hand-selected, whole-bunch fermentation captures subtle fruit complexity, and careful barrel ageing enhances depth and balance. The final blend is unfiltered, unrefined, and layered with red berries, cherries, mulberries, subtle spice, and earthy notes.

As with the paradox that inspired its name, Paradoks challenges convention while delivering harmony. It is a wine that is both bold and elegant, drinking beautifully now and promising even greater complexity with age
